“Amaranta Ursula and little Aureliano would remember the rains as a happy time. In spite of Fernanda’s strictness, they would splash in the puddles in the courtyard, catch lizards and dissect them, and pretemd they were poisoning the soup with dust from butterfly wings when Santa Sofia de la Piedad was not looking. Ursula was their most amusing plaything.”
This passage shows the true innocence of children and their ability to turn a horrible situation for most into a pleasant one for themselves. As kids often do, they see the rain as an opportunity to create a new series of games and pastimes that will allow them to have fun during the day. Although Amaranta Ursula is an adult her playful nature and love for her son allows her to be happy in this depressing period of time. Aureliano has truly taken on the traits of his father, having an air of solitude about him and an intellectual capacity for creativity. Ursula is becoming the old lady of the house who can no longer keep everything together. This quotation shows that by stating that even Amaranta Ursula likes to use her as a play toy. She is constantly used as a source for the entertainment of others because of her old age and obliviousness. Ultimately, this passage shows the true nature of children as innocent and playful people who are reminders of how life should be led in somber situations.

i agree with that
i also think that with little auerliano and amaranta ursula playing the rain, shows that they dont understand the real meaning of the rain and what it means to urusla and all the other buendias and family members.
Also that no one has really been there to tell little A and AU what has been going on in Macondo and what everything means
Yes Marky Mark, I agree. I think that Amaranta Ursula's and Aureliano's playfulness and happiness during this pretty gloomy time during the nonstop rain shows how innocent and free that young children are. I think also that it shows their disrespect towards older people, including Fernanda and Ursula. They take advantage of Ursula by using her as a plaything and also they play in the puddles and do other stuff that Fernanda doesn't really allow them to do. I also think your last sentence makes a good connection towards real life and how people should try and make the best out of bad times.
I agree with what you are saying here. I also think it is important to recognized the change of role that ursula has partaken in. At one point she was the one who seized authority when her kin became reckless, however, now she is nothing but a plaything. Also it seems that she has been the only stable sane member of this family and it seems very fitting that now that she is no longer able to be very active, the buendia family seems to turn to chaos.
I agree with the motif of innocence. It also demonstrtes how the children are oblivious to the terrible situation in Macondo becasue they are so young that this tragedy does not effect heir lives in the slightest way. They do disrespect Ursula, especially becasue she is such a prominent figure in the history of Macondo, but I don't think it's fair to judge and scold the children becausee they are still very young and only worry about their own happiness.
I agree with that.
I also think that becuase the children are able to make this bad situation a good one, this shows that they are free to make their own decisions, and free to be what they want as they grow up. Macondo seems to be becoming more and more socially structured so the children, being able to escape this by playing is good becuase they are also moving away from Fernanda. Fernanda did not let the children do certain things, and using Ursula helps them escape this.
