Santa Sophia de la Piedad

GGM in this passage shows the lack of appreciation towards Santa Sofia de la Piedad. She sacrifices herself for the well being of others which is not only apparent in this passage but also through the rest of the novel. She does everything in her power to further others and ensure they’re well being. Sofia, like Ursula is not recognized and both are taken for granted. This suggests something about the social dynamics of the town. It seems as if the town thrives off the good things that happen, and fail to realize who causes their happiness. They assume that someone is going to come along and clean up after them and make everything better. Sophia really is not mentioned much throughout the book and it is now evident that she in fact the reason for much of the success in Macondo. Since Sofia is taken for granted, she ends up leaving the town because no one even notices her presence from day to day and is never seen again. (p357)
