"In their delirium amaranta ursula would answer gastons letters. she felt him to be so far away and busy that his return seemed impossivle to her. in one of his first letters he told her that his partners had actully sent the airplane, but that a shipping agent in crussels had sent it by mistake to yanganyika, it was delivered to the scattered trive of makondos that mixup brought on so many difficulites that just to get the plane back might take two years. so amaranta ursula dismissed the possibility of an inpooprtune return. aureliano, for his part, had no other contact with the world except for the letters from the wise cataolnian and the news he had of gabriel through mercedes, the silent pharmacist"

At this time in the book, basically everyone in Macando. The only main characters left are Amarant Ursula and Aurelanio II. A major motif that is shown here is solitude. AU and Aurelanio are left in solitude by the ones close to them, and Macando is once again a town with nothing in it. To further suppor the solitude of Macando and the two reamaining inhabitants, both AU and Aruelanio write to the people who left Macando last. In Amarantas letter to her husband Gaston, he tries to connect with Macando via airplane, but it was accidently sent to a different "Makondos" in a far away conuntry. In Aruelianos letters to Gaberial, he finds out that he decided to stay in Paris instead of coming home. These examples show that the end of Macando is coming, and it eventually does at the end of the novel.

I also think that it is interesting that "Makondos" gets mixed with Macondo, suggesting that it already being erased from memory. Because they set to deny all that happened there, there is no more to remember of Macondo, no more significance of the town, that it is easily forgotten. It is no surprise that most of the inhabitants left, as there was nothing left for them in Macondo anymore.
