With a sweep of her broom she did away with the funeral mementos and piles of useless trash and articles of superstition that had been piling up in the corners, and the only thing she spared, out of the gratitude to Ursula, was the daguerreotype of Remedios in the parlor. (378)
This passage symbolizes how Amaranta Ursula is sweeping away the history and memory of Ursula. She moves away the final memories of Ursula by sweeping away her funeral arrangements. The piles of trash and articles of superstition symbolize the past memories and events that had happened in the history of Macondo. Amaranta Ursula effortlessly gets rid of these memories. Demonistrating how easy it is to forget things in Macondo. The only thing that remains in the room is the dagaurrotypes picture of Remedios. This is important because the dagaurrotype was the first technology introduced into Macondo, and since it wasn't taken away it shows how technology has overcome Macondo.

good job kevin, i agree with everything you said in your explicationn
i noticed the reocurring motif of forgetfullness or insomnia that occurs here in Ursula being forgotten. Her possesions are swept away showing that with her death her influence is fading or being deteriorated in Macondo and this is bad because her influence represented the last remnants of the old and pure Macondo. In forgetting these and leaving technology in its place it shows the corruption and death that macondo is undergoing.
I agree with your explication, especially the part about the daguerreotype. It represents the beginning of the end for Macondo, as it was one of the first appearances of technology in the town. In this chapter we also observed more negative diction which contributed to the foreshadowing of Macondo's final downfall. As we near the end of the book, it seems more and more inevitable that Macondo has passed the point of no return Unfortunately for the once small and quaint town, its days are numbered.
Good explication. I think the sweeping away of the old also ties in with the "progressive and ireemediable wearing of the axle" metaphor for Macondo's advancements. We also touched on this in class today, but i also found the use of the word 'spare' to be interesting
Good explication Kevin, your explication perfectly shows the use of forgetfulness and how it is so easy for somebody to forget the past. I think that the symbolism of "sweeping away" the memories of Ursula can also be a parallel to the state of Macondo. The whole city has practically been washed away literally by the flood, but also symbolically with the forgetting of the past and the culture that once made Macondo so strong. It seems like there are no ties to the old Macondo anymore and that the new Macondo is almost destined for destruction.
Amaranta Ursula is sweeping away the memories and past of Macondo when she sweeps away Ursula's remnants. The sweeping represents the end of Macondo as all the memories will be erased. The photograph of Remedios was left as a symbol of the beginning and end of Macondo. Ursula's legacy will be forgotten, as will her customs and traditions along with the rest of Macondo.
I too agree. I feel that Marquez shows utter desperation and devastation when the final memories, Ursuala's possessions, are being swept away. Ursula was the base and strength of Macondo, and with her memory gone, I feel that there is no hope for Macondo.
i agree, and with the "sweeping away" of the memories shows the repeating of the want to forget many things. many of the family members in the past along with right now, have been trying to forget the past, putting the deaths and bad memories behind them. amaranta urusla sweeps away all of uruslas funerals posessions because she wants a new beginning, wants to forget the past and try to move on without the dread of ursula being dead, also since ursula was the leader of the town and was the one who wanted to cherish all of the memories.
i agree that amaranta ursula is trying to get rid of all the memories of the buendia household. she is trying to take over the leading role in the family but she is getting rid of all the memories of ursula who was the only successful leader of the buendias. this shows that with the removal of ursulas presence will come the end of macondo and the buendia family.
