Page 404 “In that Macondo forgotten even by the birds, where the dust and the heat had become so strong that it was difficult to breathe, secluded by solitude and love and by the solitude of love in a house where it was almost impossible to sleep because of the noise of red ants, Aureliano and Amaranta Ursula were the only happy beings, and the most happy on the face of the earth.”

This quote conveys the themes of solitude, the loss of memory and love. It portrays the decaying of the dead town and becoming more and more secluded, where nothing is alive and everyone left is solitary. Since Macondo is finally coming to an end, Aureliano and Amaranta U being the only ones left, are the only happy beings on earth, also since they both have tried to erase the bad memories that they and the town have experienced. It is easy for Aureliano and Amaranta U to be happy because they don’t have the memory anymore of the past, allowing them to be “secluded by solitude and love”. There is so much “solitude of love in [their] house” because they don’t leave anymore, and them being the only ones left, they are only responsible for loving each other and no one else. Some of the imagery that portrays the decaying of Macondo is the noise of the red ants, also showing that Macondo is coming to an end. Also the dust and the heat that make it difficult to breathe show the difficulty to survive in the town and the struggle they have to go through, just the two of them.

This passage defiantly shows the state Macondo is in. The only people that have joy in their lives are Aureliano and Amaranta and thats because they have seperated themselves from Macondo and the past, like you've said. I'm guessing that the red ants represent all the problems in the town. The ants are tearing down the house kind of like the problems are tearing down the city. This suggests that in this situation you cannot be happy within Macondo and must either remove yourself from the down or manage to forget the past and exclude yourself from society.

By revealing the extent of Aureliano and Amaranta Ursula's love and in their love their solitude, this passage contains the highest level of solitude by anyone in the Buendia family throughout the novel. Because the Buendia family is at the core of Macondo and its fates, Macondo is therefore at its peak solitude and is clearly headed for the end of its existence. Good job Kameryn :)

This is another strong example of how the end of Macondo is coming, and it's coming fast. The birds used to keep the exact time for Macondoans, yet the people switched to clocks, and got rid of the birds. The people of Macondo have been slowly hurting their own civilization by many means, including this example and the way the banana plantations took over them and merged into the Macondoans' lives. The birds are a symbol of Macondo's birth, and now that they are gone, it shows that the end of Macondo is very near. Also the fact that the baby was killed by the red ants is really significant. The town has been taken over by many things, yet this baby was a sign of new hope for Macondo. As soon as she was killed, all hope for Macondo died with her.
